Donn Sabean is a Halifax-based artist and designer. Donn hand-dyes and hand-prints silks using real leaves and other eco-friendly, low-impact dyeing processes, to create original textiles in small batches. She uses these limited textiles and equally rare and reclaimed vintage silks to design and construct luxe one-of-a-kind garments and accessories, using a minimal-cut, low-waste approach.
Garment Inspiration
Donn’s design is inspired by the structure of a symphony, a musical composition made up of four movements that vary in tempo, mood, and character. The gown translates these movements into four key design elements. The top references the overture through a white tuxedo shirt inspired by a conductor’s attire, while the skirt incorporates elements of sheet music, including the bass clef, stave, notes, and piano keys. Like the experience of those impacted by breast cancer, a symphony moves through many moments and emotions. The design commemorates the distinct movements that come together to create a powerful story of resilience.
